Tag a Donor
Put your own labels on donors - 'board contact', 'attended the launch', 'wants a call before the ask' - and pull the list of everyone carrying one.
Tags are free text your team writes. Together brings nothing to them: no scoring, no automation, no meaning of its own. They are for the things only your fundraisers know.
Before you start
Tags are on every plan, including Free.
ADMIN and EDITOR can put a tag on a donor and create a new one. VIEWER can read them. Renaming, merging and archiving tags happen in Settings -> Tags and are ADMIN only, because a rename changes what every donor carrying the tag says.
Do not tag a health condition, a legal matter, a relationship breakdown or anything similar. A tag is plain text on a donor record: anyone in your organisation who can open that donor can read it, and there is no way to restrict who sees one. Keep that kind of note in a system your organisation controls.
Tag a donor
- Open a donor from Donors. Tags are the first section of the Intelligence card, in the left column.
- Click the Add a tag box and start typing.
- Pick a tag from the list, or click Create "..." when nothing matches. A new tag is available to everyone in your organisation straight away.
- To take a tag off, click the x on its chip.
Every change saves as you make it, so there is no Save button to press.
Tag names are 1 to 60 characters, and case does not create a second tag: type "major donor" when you already have "Major Donor" and you get the one you have. Extra spaces are tidied up the same way. An organisation can hold 500 tags; past that, Together asks you to merge or archive a few of the ones you have.
Adding and removing a tag is recorded in the audit log, against the donor. The tag's name is never written into the log's permanent record.
Filter the donors list by tag
On Donors, pick a tag from the dropdown beside the search box. The list narrows to donors carrying it, and the filter holds while you search and page through the results. Pick All tags to clear it.
A saved link that filters by a tag someone has archived since still filters, and the dropdown shows Filtered by an archived tag greyed out so you can see that it is on. Pick All tags to clear it.
The filter matches one tag at a time.
The list shows givers only unless you pick Everyone, so a tagged donor who has not given yet appears only under Everyone. See Who the Donors list shows.
Build a segment from a tag
For anything the list filter cannot ask - everyone carrying a tag who has also given in the last 90 days, say - build a segment with a Tags criterion, on Grow and above. Pick is any of to match anyone carrying one of the tags you tick, or is none of to leave them out, and add other criteria beside it: a donor joins the segment only when they match all of them. See the segment criteria reference for the full list.
Email everyone with a tag
On the Send tab of an email, pick Everyone with a tag under Who it goes to and choose the tag - on Grow and above, like the other targeted audiences. See set up email sending.
Rename, merge and archive
The library lives at Settings -> Tags, with a count of how many donors carry each one.
- Rename a tag and every donor carrying it follows. Nothing else changes.
- Merge two tags when they mean the same thing. Everyone carrying the losing tag gains the winner, and the loser is archived. An email send to the winning tag that has not finished yet will reach those donors too, since a tag audience is worked out as the send goes out; a send to the LOSING tag blocks the merge until it finishes or is cancelled. Any segment built on the losing tag follows the survivor automatically, so a merge never silently changes who a segment holds. Pick the survivor carefully: the merge cannot be undone by merging back.
- Archive a tag you have stopped using. It leaves the pickers, so nobody can add it to anyone new - but it stays on the donors who already have it, shown greyed out on their page, and you can still take it off them one by one. Un-archive it and it is back in the pickers exactly as it was.
A segment already built on a tag keeps working after that tag is archived: the donors still carry it, so they stay in the segment. Editing that segment is the one thing you cannot do until you either untick the archived tag in its criteria or un-archive it - the builder shows it ticked and marked (archived) so you can see which one it is.
Archiving keeps the name, so nobody can mint a second tag with the same name later. Together has no way to delete a tag.
Over the API
Every donor the API returns carries a tags list, each entry with an id and a name. Archived tags are in that list too, because the donor still carries them.
To find donors by tag, pass its name - GET /api/v1/donors?tag=Major prospect. Case and extra spaces do not matter, one tag at a time, and a name your organisation has never used comes back as a not-found error rather than as your whole donor list.
That request returns one page of at most limit donors (10 by default, up to 100 with ?limit=100), not everyone carrying the tag. total tells you how many carry it and truncated tells you the page is not the whole set - there is no way to page past that first page, so treat it as "show me some" rather than "export them all". For a tag bigger than one page, work from the Donors list in the app.
The tag library itself is not managed over the API: creating, renaming, merging and archiving happen in Settings -> Tags, and putting a tag on a donor happens on the donor's page. The API reads tags and filters by them - nothing more.
See the API reference for the full request and response.
What to do next
- Track relationships between donors - who is connected to whom, for the ties a tag cannot carry.
- Log contact with a donor - record the conversation behind the tag.
