Set default payment methods
Choose the payment methods your donation forms and checkout links offer, in one place. Every form and link set to use the organisation default follows a change here straight away.
Before you start
You need ADMIN on your organisation. Editors build forms and links; the defaults they follow are set once, organisation-wide, in Settings.
Until an admin changes them, the default for forms and checkout links is Card alone. Add BECS Direct Debit or PayTo here once your Stripe account offers them.
Change the defaults
- Go to Settings -> Engage -> Payment methods.
- Under Forms and checkout links, tick the methods they should offer. Tick at least one.
- Click Save changes.
A method your Stripe account doesn't offer shows greyed-out and can't be ticked. Bank transfer stays greyed-out here until Together turns it on for your organisation: it is in limited release, so contact support@alltogether.giving to request it.
Saving checks every method you've just added against each Stripe account a form or link using the default sends donations to: your default account, and any other account chosen in "Send donations to". If one of those accounts doesn't offer the method, the save is refused and names the forms and links on that account. A method already in your defaults stays there even if Stripe later switches it off.
Use the default on a form or link
Each form and checkout link has two choices above its payment methods:
- Use organisation default - the form or link offers your defaults as they stand. Change the defaults in Settings and it changes too, with no edit to the form. The methods show greyed-out, because they are set here, not on the form.
- Choose specific methods - the form or link keeps its own list, whatever the defaults say. Choosing this starts you from your defaults, minus anything that form's Stripe account doesn't offer.
New forms and links start on Use organisation default. So do forms and links that were saved with no methods ticked. A form or link on your default Stripe account can always use the default, because saving the defaults already checked them against that account. One sent to a different account in "Send donations to" is checked against that account when you save it.
Forms and checkout links created over the API use the organisation default too, unless the request names its own methods. The API cannot change the defaults; only an admin in Settings can.
If it goes wrong
- Save says a method is not currently available. A Stripe account that a form or link using the default sends donations to doesn't offer it. The message names the forms and links on that account. Untick the method, switch it on in Stripe first, or give those forms and links their own methods with Choose specific methods.
- Save says it couldn't verify with Stripe. Together couldn't reach Stripe to check the method you added. Try again in a minute.
- Save says to finish connecting Stripe first. Your default Stripe account can't take payments yet, so only Card can be added. Finish connecting Stripe in Settings -> Stripe, then add the rest.
- Making another Stripe account the default is refused. That account doesn't offer one of your default payment methods. Remove it from your defaults here first, then switch.
- A form won't save on Use organisation default. That form sends donations to a different Stripe account that doesn't offer one of your defaults. Choose specific methods for it, or change the defaults.
What to do next
- Donation form fields - every field on a form, including payment methods.
- Create a checkout link - a one-off, pre-filled donation URL for a single donor.
